1945年德国战败，驱逐外侮的波兰社会却并未迎来真正的和平。不同派系、官僚之间的仇杀不时出现……马契克（Zbigniew Cybulski 饰）与长官安杰依奉老上司、市长斯维茨基命令，暗杀新到任的工人党地区书记斯祝卡，但马契克一时大意误杀两名无辜工人。 斯维茨基即将升任部长大摆筵席，马契克沉浸在伤害无辜的深深内疚中，只能借与酒吧女克里斯蒂娜的短暂关系排解苦闷，安杰依要求马契克重新振作，执行军人的天职。斯祝卡厌恶当地官员们的浮华纵乐，然而他却连自己失散的儿子都无法找回。茫茫夜色中，马契克找到斯祝卡，两人同时要面对战后废墟中的宿命安排。 本片获1959年威尼斯电影节国际影评人费比西奖。是导演安杰依·瓦伊达（Andrzej Wajda）战争三部曲的收官之作。

There are so many great things about how this movie is made - the directing, the shots, the tonal quality, and the pacing. Probably most brilliant of all is how the total makes the viewer feel claustrophobic. I admit, though, it's a tad dated.
