叶淑柔和谢南枝跨越时空、书信相系的情谊构成了好故事的核心，不过视角稍稍拉远便得见本片大量不足：通篇平铺直叙，回忆的插入毫无技巧、甚至影响叙事流畅度；开篇的欠债风波、南洋的华文教育、与印度裔族群的冲突等内容着墨过多，分散了对故事主干的关注；谢南枝“扮演”郑木生十八年，对她个人想法和心理变化的交代却始终不清不楚。本片对于发掘华侨历史记忆的价值远大于剧作本身，以一种易于接受的方式让更多人了解这段往事也是好事一桩。
